Followers all, gather

To see and rejoice

The time is near, the time has come

Let the Great King hear your voice

In the dungeons of Under-Earth, my heart was in despair. Now, I feel such peace. Before we walk down the mountain, Brin hesitates.

“I don't know if I can do it," he says, "I have to look down.”

“Just look at my back,” Turq encourages him, “I will go ahead of you.”

Evermyn and I exchange glances. This boy is stealing our hearts. The folk talk companionably and go to their homes. Children run toward the riverside calling and laughing. The elder and his wife invite us to their hut. It stands in the center of the village, decorated with paintings of rock beasts. Inside, the smell of tree oils fills the room.

“How can we help you young adventurers?” the elder asks.

His wife has bright gray eyes, and her long, white hair is braided and twisted around her head.

“The Usheler’s attack destroyed our people and harvests, leaving those who survive in despair,” I say. “Our teacher advised us that you could help.”

The elder opens a large wooden chest marked with the same rock-beast carvings we saw on the peak. He takes out leather pouches.

“These seeds will help you,” he says, “The Great King alone knows why they grow so fast. You will not have to wait long for the harvest.

“We also have a precious food source. Our chaymberries can be stored for a very long time. Just one has great restorative power. We will give you dried berries to take with you. They will be easier to carry.”

He goes to the door and calls other folk to help us. Each man brings sacks from storage rooms filled with berries. They are light as a feather. For a moment, we are silent, overwhelmed by their generosity.

“Thank you,” I say, “You give our people hope.”

The elder gives me a dull craggy stone, light and warm to the touch.

“Take this salt stone,” he says, “It will give you light in the darkness. May the Great King guide you and his words ever comfort you.”
